FAIR-PRESONS PROJECT
The FAIR-PReSONS project, funded by the European Union and coordinated by the University of the Aegean, focuses on addressing biases in recidivism data to promote fair and equitable decisions in criminal justice systems across Greece, Portugal, and Bulgaria. A significant aspect of the project is collecting and digitizing data from prisons and offender management systems in these countries. This data is structured into knowledge graphs and made accessible through a dedicated data portal.
A preliminary gender analysis will identify and mitigate gender biases in recidivism prediction systems, along with biases from other sensitive attributes. To enhance fairness, the project employs advanced algorithms, integrating knowledge graphs with artificial neural networks, aiming to improve predictions’ accuracy and explainability.
The project also emphasizes practical applications, training 80 judges and legal practitioners on the ethical and effective use of the AI tool. Dissemination efforts include a data portal, publications, a project website, social media outreach, and events across participating countries, aiming to reach a wide audience. By addressing biases and fostering fairness, the project seeks to support unbiased decision-making in the judicial system and mitigate gender stereotypes.
